"Discover the diversity and authenticity of the valleys that shape Cabrales"
The most common entrance to the council is through the high Ortiguero coming from the A-8. Shortly after starting the descent along the AS-114, we find the deep and spectacular Casaño river canyon that runs parallel to the road, flowing in an easterly direction, acting as a natural border between the coastal Sierra del Cuera, and the Western Massif of the Picos de Europa. Although it is a mountain valley surrounded by considerable slopes, as it has areas of gentler relief and has many hours of sunshine as its course is oriented to the west. The AS-114 that runs through it will take us through most of the villages of the council, all kinds of services, in Carreña, the capital, until it ends in the authentic "Base Camp of the Picos", Arenas de Cabrales.
Already in Arenas the Casaño yields its waters to the Cares and the confluence of both generates the flattest area of the council,
From Arenas, if we choose the adventure, we will go south, upstream of the Cares, to go into the heart of the Picos de Europa. We will quickly see the stone walls close around us,
We will hardly find villages on our route, the relief does not allow it.
Poncebos, the first milestone on our way is a decisive crossroads. Here converge the Cares and the Duje and from here all the routes to the heart of the Urrieles start.
If we choose to follow Cares up we must leave the car, unless we want to climb to Camarmeña, otherwise, we must choose between climbing to Bulnes or go through the Cares Gorge.
If we choose the Duje a high mountain road will take us, also upstream, to the two highest villages of Cabrales: Tielve and Sotres.
Both rivers; Duje and Cares pass through closed valleys when not, by the impossible places that runs through the Cares Gorge.
If our option is to continue eastward, from Arenas, we will leave the council of Cabrales, traveling the Cares downstream, towards Peñamellera. Although it receives more water, it becomes boxed again (Peñamellera Gorge) before reaching Panes, maintaining that brave character that does not allow settlements on its slopes
Below, you can see the characteristics of the villages of our valleys.and a route that runs along the most unknown part of the river Casaño and brings us closer to its source.
