DISCOVER CABRALES
Cheese, mountain and much more

The Council of Cabrales, located in the east of the Principality of Asturias, is one of the most emblematic areas of rural Asturias and Asturias itself. It is part of the Picos de Europa National Park, which makes it an area of high landscape, ecological and cultural value.

The capital of the council is Carreña, where the Town Hall is located. Next to it, there are other towns such as Arenas de Cabrales, the most populated, or Bulnes, historically isolated and even today without road access, which can only be reached on foot or by funicular. In total, the council is made up of 18 villages, each with its own identity and heritage, which reinforces the diversity and richness of the territory.

Cabrales is a territory historically linked to mountain livestock, grazing and artisanal processing of products, with Cabrales cheese with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) being its main agri-food emblem. This blue cheese, with an intense flavor and unique character, is traditionally matured in caves, where the constant humidity and temperature favor the development of penicillium-type molds, which gives it its characteristic blue-greenish areas and veins.

The council is also a reference for active, nature and cultural tourism, thanks to its integration in the Picos de Europa and landmarks such as the Cares Route, one of the busiest trails in Spain, or the Picu Urriellu (Naranjo de Bulnes), iconic peak of national and international mountaineering.

In terms of heritage, Cabrales preserves valuable elements such as the church of Santa María de Llas (Arenas de Cabrales), historic bridges: the Conceyu bridge (Carreña), granaries, traditional Asturian architecture and other ethnographic testimonies that reflect a deeply rooted rural culture. Of special relevance are the prehistoric sites recognized as World Heritage by UNESCO: the Cave of La Covaciella and the Cave of El Bosque, with their magnificent sets of Paleolithic cave art. The patron saint festivals, livestock fairs, the Cabrales Cultural Week, which culminates in the Cabrales Cheese Contest, as well as mountaineering, are an integral part of community life.

Cabrales is not just a place; it is a way of understanding life linked to the landscape, collective effort and the defense of the territory. The coexistence between tradition and modernity, between conservation and economic dynamism, defines this council as one of the great references of the contemporary Asturian rural world.
