Our Lady of Health (Carreña)
It is celebrated in Carreña, the capital of the council, on the Sunday following September 8 (Asturias Day).
The events in honor of Our Lady of Health, patron saint of the council of Cabrales, are always held on the Sunday following September 8, which is Asturias Day, the autonomous community's public holiday.
The history of this devotion is linked to that of an emigrant from Cabrales, Francisco Bueno de la Bárcena, who fell ill in Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz) around 1830 and, after being freed from blindness, sent for a virgin to be brought from Seville, to which a chapel was built in Carreña.
Since then, the Virgin only leaves her shrine once a year, she does so for the massive procession where all the inhabitants of Carreña, as well as the neighbors of the villages of the municipality (Asiegu, Arangas, Tielve, Arenas, Berodia, Puertas...) turn to celebrate it; each one with their particular songs and offerings of branches.
